Description:
VirusRemover2008 is a rogue anti-Spyware scanner, this means that it exercises misleading tactics in order to frighten users into registering the product.
Rogues employ various degrees of deception. VirusRemover2008 does not actually scan for any Spyware or Adware. Instead it simply comes equipped with a pre-set list of dire-sounding threats. It uses the items in the list to arbitrarily select entries to fill its results field. It then pressures the user into buying the application in order to clean the non-existent threats.
An effective rogue program succeeds by making itself look genuine. To this effect, VirusRemover2008 doesn't install any hidden or randomized files, but it does an adequate job of looking genuine. And while it does not pose a threat to system, it's aggressive and highly aggravating sales tactics often get users to yield a credit card number. It will display popup balloons in the taskbar, start on every Windows Bootup, and periodically display popup alerts on the desktop, reminding the user of the so-called eminent threats. VirusRemover2008 and is so systematically invasive that many testers report the program interfering with normal processes causing indirect problems like error messages and computer freezes. It also refuses to acknowledge right-clicks on the taskbar icon, thus preventing the user from actually ending the program's process. To end the process the user must do so manually in the task manager.
VirusRemover2008, PCPrivacy Cleaner, & System Doctor
VirusRemover is one in a suite of misleading applications, each one corresponding to the three most marketed arenas of PC care. Once installed, VirusRemover2008 will display a popup alert warning the users that they are in danger of privacy violations, i.e. readable history files that the Virus protection software doesn't look for. If the users click “yes” to the message advertising a solution, they will automatically download PCPrivacy Cleaner. While not a rogue anti-Spyware program, this cleaning utility works the same way, displaying false and exaggerated entries that scare users and then deny them any resolution unless the application is purchased. If allowed to remain on the system VirusRemover 2008 will display yet another alert, this time advertising a rogue Registry Cleaner, System Doctor. The idea is that with compounded threat results, the user will be more likely to purchase at least one of the programs. In reality none of them work as advertised.

Spyware Symptoms
There are a number of telltale signs to look for that can indicate when spyware has infected your PC. Knowing and understanding these spyware symptoms can help you reduce the amount of time spyware spends on your system and the amount of damage it can do to your computer. Here are just some of the potential spyware symptoms your computer may exhibit:
Annoying Pop-Up Advertisements:
Almost everyone experiences one or two pop-ups every now and then, but if you're getting more than your fair share of pop-up ads, then spyware may be the culprit. Many unwanted software applications, such as spyware, will cause frequent occurrences of pop-up advertisements on your desktop. If you notice an increase in the number of pop-up ads you receive, you may be infected with spyware.
Changes in Internet Settings
Many spyware applications have been known to change a user's Internet settings without their knowledge or consent. To make matters worse, if you try to change your settings back to the way they were before, spyware can just change them back again. If you notice that your search page or homepage settings have changed without explanation, spyware may be the reason.
Unwanted Web Browser Components
If you notice additions to your Internet browser that you do not remember downloading or installing, spyware may be the reason. Many spyware applications add search toolbars and other BHOs (browser helper objects) to your Internet browser without your knowledge or consent.
Decreased System Speeds
It is very common for computers infected with spyware to experience decreases in speed and performance. This is because spyware often uses a computer's system resources to execute malicious operations. This creates a drain on your system and will result in slower Internet speeds and overall decreases in PC performance. If you notice a sudden change in the performance of your computer, it may be infected with spyware.
If you have reason to believe that your computer has been infected with spyware, it is highly recommended that you use AntiSpyware 2009's free spyware scan to detect any spyware files.

What is a Rogue AntiSpyware?
Rogue anti-spyware is exactly what it sounds like "Anti-Spyware" programs gone bad. Some rogue anti-spyware programs are simply anti-spyware products that just don't work like they should while other rogue anti-spyware programs are more ominous in nature and actually act as spyware on the systems they are supposed to be protecting. Because it's hard to tell rogue anti-spyware from the real thing, it's critical that you only download and use trusted anti-spyware products.
