Description:
Mabutu is a Mass-Mailing Worm that propagates itself by ferreting out all of the email address on a victim's computer. It searches through any file containing the ending .txt, .htm, .html, or .wab. Once it has collected the addresses, it sends a copy of itself to each contact in the form of an attachment. The messages sport different texts, but they are usually misleading, vague or otherwise enticing notes that can momentarily trick recipients into thinking that the file isn't malicious.
To avoid detection, Mabutu hosts its own SMTP engine. This allows it to send the emails without using any of the email clients already installed on the computer. Additionally, it uses variable parts so that removing any one won't necessarily remove the parasite. It has a .exe and a .dll component. Once the .exe file is executed, it drops the .dll file in a variable location. This latter file contains the replication code, so finding and removing the .exe won't necessarily remove the parasite.
Mabutu's secondary objective is to open a Backdoor on a targeted PC. It opens a variable TCP port (at one time known to be port 6667) and attempts to connect to an IRC server. From there it can await commands from a remote hacker.

How did Mabutu get on my computer?
Wondering how Mabutu was able to infiltrate your defenses and infect your PC? You're not alone. Millions of users become infected with Mabutu each and every day.
The most common reason for becoming infected with Mabutu is a lack of advanced anti-spyware protection. These are just a few of the ways spyware can infect your PC:
1. P2P (Peer-to-Peer) Networks
P2P networks have become increasingly popular over the years. As P2P popularity has increased, so have the risks associated with using these networks. When you install a P2P application or download a file from a P2P network, it is not uncommon for spyware to be bundled in with the files and the software.
2. Freeware and Shareware
Many computer users discover the hard way that freeware and shareware aren't really free at all. Many of these "free" applications come bundled with spyware, which may very well be how the application ended up on your PC.
3. Malicious Websites
Not all websites are innocent. In fact, some are designed with malicious intent. If you visit one of these websites, spyware may automatically install on your hard drive without your knowledge or consent.
Quick Fix: Download AntiSpyware 2010's spyware scanner and expose all of the spyware lurking on your PC.
There are dozens of anti-spyware applications being marketed to consumers. Unfortunately, many of them do not work. Rely on a name that is trusted by many of the industry's top experts. Use AntiSpyware 2010's spyware scanner to detect spyware and to check for updates on the latest spyware threats.

Spyware Symptoms
There are a number of telltale signs to look for that can indicate when spyware has infected your PC. Knowing and understanding these spyware symptoms can help you reduce the amount of time spyware spends on your system and the amount of damage it can do to your computer. Here are just some of the potential spyware symptoms your computer may exhibit:
Annoying Pop-Up Advertisements:
Almost everyone experiences one or two pop-ups every now and then, but if you're getting more than your fair share of pop-up ads, then spyware may be the culprit. Many unwanted software applications, such as spyware, will cause frequent occurrences of pop-up advertisements on your desktop. If you notice an increase in the number of pop-up ads you receive, you may be infected with spyware.
Changes in Internet Settings
Many spyware applications have been known to change a user's Internet settings without their knowledge or consent. To make matters worse, if you try to change your settings back to the way they were before, spyware can just change them back again. If you notice that your search page or homepage settings have changed without explanation, spyware may be the reason.
Unwanted Web Browser Components
If you notice additions to your Internet browser that you do not remember downloading or installing, spyware may be the reason. Many spyware applications add search toolbars and other BHOs (browser helper objects) to your Internet browser without your knowledge or consent.
Decreased System Speeds
It is very common for computers infected with spyware to experience decreases in speed and performance. This is because spyware often uses a computer's system resources to execute malicious operations. This creates a drain on your system and will result in slower Internet speeds and overall decreases in PC performance. If you notice a sudden change in the performance of your computer, it may be infected with spyware.
If you have reason to believe that your computer has been infected with spyware, it is highly recommended that you use AntiSpyware 2010's free spyware scan to detect any spyware files.

What is a Email-Worm?
Email Worms, like all worms, an email worm is a self-propagating (self replicating) program. This one, logically, is contracted via email. These are perhaps the most recognizable form of malware since almost anyone with an email address has come across their fair share of bogus emails, many of which contain harmful programs.
Not too long ago people began to be very concerned about opening email attachments. These worms were the reason. Like any malicious software, this worm is a program and can only function if it is executed, so it took an active gesture from a user, such as opening the attachment, to install itself on a computer. There are, however, some more complicated email worms that can install themselves by being laced into the html rendering of an email's body. Thus, just reading the email puts the user at some risk, especially if the email client (programs like Microsoft Outlook) had a viewing pane that showed the email if it was simply highlighted in the inbox.
Fortunately, most modern email clients offer plain text rendering of their emails, so it cannot harbor malicious code. Worm makers are wily though, and recently email worms have made a resurgence thanks to a process dubbed social engineering, a method that employs more trickery than coding muscle to get a user to install the worm. Scams such as phishing are particularly successful in getting unsuspecting users to divulge vital information and open themselves up to these worms.
For the most part, email today is much safer than it used to be, but good rules of caution are still needed. Don't open attachments from people/organizations you do not know and be wary of official looking emails that ask for vital information (such as account numbers or credit card numbers). No reputable organization ever asks for these via email, only on their secure sites. And remember, when in doubt, pick up the phone and ask.
